Web Design Questions

The first question we're usually asked is the toughest to answer as there are so many variables, but we'll give it our best shot...)

How much will it cost?

A professional, stylish and effective web site needn't cost the earth — for less than the cost of a weekly advert in a local newspaper for a year, you can reach a far wider audience and provide a valuable online portfolio for your exisiting and prospective customers.

A basic website, ideal for those on a budget or those who prefer a simple, magazine-style website, will cost anything from £800 to £1200. This site will be light on graphics and largely information-based.

Expect a stylish, static (non-moving parts) 6-10 page website that will stand out from the crowd to cost from £1200 to £1500. This price is for a site that has minimal graphical complexity and no logo production. What you do get is rock-solid, hand-crafted, browser-tested CSS, XHTML, and simple (but striking) graphic design.

In most cases larger sites, with bells and whistles like inter-activity, sleek photo galleries, and extra graphics push the price up into the £2000 to £3000 range. From there, the price is largely dictated by page-specific programming (booking systems, for instance) and custom graphic and logo design.

Our prices don't carry any hidden extras, and, importantly, include optimising your site for search engine visibility.

I've seen cheaper elsewhere...

We'll let John Ruskin answer this one; over a century ago, he wrote:

"There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person's lawful prey.

It is unwise to pay too much, but it is also unwise to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all.

When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...

It can't be done."

Our websites are lovingly hand crafted and represent the very best in web design. We don't use one-size-fits-all templates - each site is created from scratch and is totally unique.

How long will it take?

We usually require a a minimum of one month's notice, and will aim to complete your web site in 2-3 weeks. This should give you enough time to compose the content, or 'copy', of your site. We will be happy to assist you with this process.

I already have a website, but it's looking dated...

One of our considerations when designing a website is timlessness. We loved the lime greens that were fashionable a few years ago, but we favour classic colour and design schemes that won't date. We are happy to undertake re-designs, and we guarantee that your visitor statistics will improve substantially as a result of our expertise.

How will I know how many visitors my web site gets?

We'll set up monthly reports which will tell you exactly how many visits your site has received, where your visitors have come from, which pages they've viewed, and what search words took them to to your site.

Can you register a domain name for me?

With pleasure. Your choice of domain name is very important, so we've prepared a domain name guide which we hope will help if you're not sure what name you want. We can register a domain name for you today if you follow the link at the end of the guide, and you can even start using your new email address (me@whatever.co.uk) within a few hours!

What about web hosting?

We can provide that too. Your web hosting package comes with limitless space and any number of email addresses, and useful facilities such as auto-responders and e-mail forwarding.

What else do I need to know?

The questions we've covered here are those that we're usually asked; however, we suggest that you take a look at the '10 Questions' on our "Choosing a Designer" page for questions that we think you should ask a prospective web designer to better understand what you should expect from them.

If there's anything we haven't covered please call us - you'll find us friendly and helpful and only too happy to talk about all things webby.
